New Components, New Skills

The theme of SAP TechEd 07 was "enterprise SOA - Put the power to work". Much of that "power" is driven by new SAP NetWeaver technology and components. In turn, each of these drives the need for new skills and capabilities. Some of the new components and technologies are discussed below:

Galaxy: This is a new Business Process Management (BPM) tool from SAP that finally brings together system and human workflow. This tool does not go into ramp up until mid 2008 and will not GA until 2009, however, once it is here is it will drive skills for BPMN modeling skills, WebServices and Java.

Visual Composer: The next release to be included in the GA version of the Composition Environment allows direct access to the ESR to find the Enterprise Services. The VC model now generates a WebDynpro model and Adobe Flex so you can choose to have the user interface (UI) look the same as code developed with WebDynpro. This means combining the two technologies in one application is easier. Visual Composer models are deployed to the Portal so in addition to the Raw VC skills, Portal and Web Security skills will also be required.

WebDynpro: The eclipse plug-in for WebDynpro in the 7.1 environment makes the anatomy of the application you are developing more obvious to a new user. This together with an easy to install download should make the tool more accessible to the general developer community. WebDynpro comes in a Java and ABAP flavour and in addition to these coding skills, knowledge of web development and web security are skill requirements. WebDynpro can also live within the SAP Portal so if this is used you will need SAP Portal skills.

Enterprise Services Repository (ESR): Finally the ESR is here as both a Repository (description of services) and a Registry (pointer to physical services). Although the services have been with us for just over a year now, the ESR will make them easier to find and manage in a landscape. This coupled with the integration of the development tooling will make consumption by SAP and non-SAP tools much easier. The ESR is embedded into the PI(XI) components, so this component will drive the need for good integration skills and Java.
